Financial Advisory for International Solar Projects in Africa

Background
Many regions in Africa still face insufficient electricity and lighting infrastructure. At the same time, the demand for reliable, sustainable and low-maintenance energy solutions is increasing, particularly for street lighting, industrial sites and public infrastructure.
A Bavarian technology company has therefore developed solar-powered street lighting systems that can operate both grid-connected and off-grid. These systems are particularly suitable for regions with limited electricity infrastructure and allow for rapid installation without complex grid connections.
The objective of the project was to establish an international business model for solar infrastructure projects – from product development and pilot installations to market entry in selected African countries.
In addition, Wendit has been developing a larger 50 MW solar power project in Southern Africa under an Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. For this project, potential investors or buyers needed to be identified.
Project Approach
DFIC supported the company in developing a financing and funding strategy for international market development. This included the analysis of suitable funding programs, the structuring of potential financing models and the development of a viable business model for solar infrastructure projects.
In addition, a market analysis for selected African target markets was conducted to identify market potential, partner structures and possible pilot projects. Regions with low electrification rates were of particular interest, as off-grid lighting systems can play an important role in improving infrastructure and safety.
For the IPP project, potential buyers were identified, including project developers, EPC companies and financial investors.
