Climate adaptation concept

Caritasverband Oberbergischer Kreis e.V.
Background
The social institutions of the Caritas Association of Oberbergischer Kreis are increasingly facing the consequences of climate change. In addition to prolonged heat waves, the region is also experiencing more frequent heavy rainfall and flooding, which are putting a strain on buildings, infrastructure and residents alike.
In order to remain resilient in the long term, the association has developed a climate adaptation concept for the St. Mariä Heimsuchung senior citizens' centre in Marienheide in collaboration with DFIC – Dr. Fromme International Consulting.
Project approach
DFIC is assisting Caritas in systematically analysing climate risks and developing structural, technical and nature-based measures.
The aim is to adapt the facility to rising temperatures and increasing heavy rainfall events, focusing on a combination of technical solutions, green and water management, and organisational precautions.
Particular attention is paid to coordinating specialist planners (architecture, building services, landscape planning) and integrating nature-based approaches into existing building structures.
Based on a climate risk analysis, targeted measures to reduce heat and heavy rainfall risks are developed and prioritised under DFIC's coordination in collaboration with architects, building services engineers, landscape architects and the facility management.
Nature-based and technical solutions are combined in a meaningful way to ensure both short-term protection and long-term sustainability.

Sustainability and transferability
The concept is being developed in such a way that it can be transferred to other institutions in the network. Close cooperation between technology, care and the supporting organisation ensures that structural adjustments and organisational processes are interlinked.
The tools developed – evaluation matrix, action profiles and funding guidelines – can serve as a guide for similar institutions in the future.
